The 4th International Conference on Mathematics in Sport will take place in Leuven (Belgium), from  June 5-7 2013.

The authors of the fantasyomatic algorithm (Michael Schuckers and Chris Anthony) submitted an abstract and were accepted to give a talk in Belgium this June.

In this paper we discuss how our ridge regression approach outperforms ordinary least square regression for prediction of future fantasy performance.

Abstract:

A Statistical Model for Prediction of National Football League (NFL) Fantasy Points (Michael Schuckers and Chris Anthony)

Fantasy sports has grown a great deal in recent years and it has been estimated that over 32 million adults in the United States and Canada participate in fantasy sports.

In fastasy sports, individuals in a fantasy leagues create a team of players from among a pool of eligible players across actual teams and those players earn points for their performance from real games. Team owners then compete against other teams in their league to obtain the most points.

The focus of this paper is the automated prediction of the number of fantasy points that a given american football player will score in a given week.

Using past weekly performance, we propose a novel ridge regression model to estimate the future performance of players across four positions: quarterback, running back, tight end and wide receiver.

To do this we considered a variety of factors including the quality of defenses that a player has faced, the surface (e.g. grass or FieldTurf) on which the game was played and whether or not the game was at home or on the road.

After analyzing data from the 2011 and 2012 NFL season, we conclude that there are consistent significant effects across positions due to a player being at home and due to the defenses that they face and, additionally, there is some position specific effects for playing surface.

Further we find strong evidence that our ridge regression approach outperforms ordinary least square regression for prediction of future fantasy performance.
